History of glow sticks. It's not just for ravers and hippies anymore
Whenever the word glow sticks are mentioned, ravers and, to a lesser extent, lava lamp-loving hippies come to mind. While it's true that glow sticks and other psychedelic enhancing paraphernalia first became big within these scenes, glow sticks have spread to many differing parts of popular culture and is no longer restricted to Phish, Grateful Dead, or trance/ambient fans. In fact, you can see glowstick accessories in many sports events, outdoor concerts, parks, even political rallies. Wherever there is a celebration and many people coming together to have a good time, glow sticks are sure to make an appearance in one form or another. Just like face paint at football rallies, glow sticks let fans and revellers add their personal touch to every event and let fans share in the general excitement and celebration.
Glowstick 101-Chemical based glow sticks
glow sticks are marvels of modern technology. They are like non-flammable, portable, and convenient personal fireworks that light up any event or celebration. What are they made of? While there are many chemical compounds that produce light when combined, the most common glow stick operates this way: inside the plastic casing is a small plastic membrane (older models use thin glass capsules) that contain hydrogen peroxide and a plastic ester solvent. Another layer, normally the outer layer, contains phenyl oxalate ester and a fluorescent tinged or colored dye. When the contents of the two chambers are mixed by breaking the membrane or plastic barrier separating them, the mixture releases oxygen atoms which energise the fluorescent dye. This results in a glowing light that has the same color as the fluorescent dye. The unstable oxygen reaction then quickly degrades into carbon dioxide. The speed of the chemical reaction determines how long the glowstick gives off colored light. The hotter the outside temperature, the faster the chemical reaction. glow sticks last a shorter time in hot climates or seasons. During the winter or in cold climates, the light generating chemical reaction lasts longer.
The new wave in Glowstick technology-LED-based glow sticks
Chemical-based glow sticks have been around forever but they are beginning to give way to LED-based glow sticks. Older chemical-based glow sticks are falling out of favour because of their limited shelf life. As mentioned above in glow sticks 101, chemical-based glow sticks have a relatively short life. You use them once. After the light-producing chemicals have fully degraded, you are left with a plastic cylinder or necklace that is soon tossed in the trash.
LED-based glow sticks last way longer, are more environmentally-friendly and, ultimately, more cost effective than traditional glow sticks.
The advantages of LED glow sticks over traditional glow sticks
LED glow sticks are more environmentally friendly than traditional glow sticks because they don't wear out as quickly as chemical-based glow sticks. How many times have you seen piles of spent glow stick plastic casings after a rave or a concert? Each of those sticks contain oil-based plastics and most don't get recycled. Many just end up in landfills further stressing environmental resources. Glow sticks can be used for a long time. The only component that needs to be replaced is the battery.
